Enrollment in Mr. Spooner’s Summer section will be limited to 40 students. Priority will be given to the oldest students and students who attend school at IKM-Manning.
Mr. Spooner’s Summer Driver Ed session will meet at the High School in Manning. Classroom sessions for the Summer section are tentatively scheduled to begin on Saturday, May 3 and should be completed by about June 19. Driving times could continue until mid to late July. Class sessions will be 3 hours in length and typically in the morning. Driving sessions will be in the morning and early afternoon. Mr. Spooner will provide specific dates and times later for those enrolled in the class.
General Information
A student must be 14 years of age and possess a valid Instruction Permit prior to the beginning of the session. It is strongly recommended that the student have driving experience in a variety of settings before enrolling in Driver Ed. Without prior driving experience a student is not likely to be successful in Driver Ed. The Driver Ed program consists of at least 30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Current cost of the course is $250 for students who attend school at IKM-Manning and $350 for those that attend school outside the district, paid in full on or before the first day of class. Make checks out to the IKM-Manning Community School District. That fee is subject to change by the school board at any time. Full, partial, or temporary waivers of the fee are available to students who qualify. Contact the high school office for more information.
A student should have had their instructional permit and have driving experience in a variety of settings before enrolling in Driver Ed. Each student must complete the 30 hours of classroom and 6 hour of behind-the-wheel time requirements for the course. It is important that a student be able to commit to attending all scheduled classes and driving sessions. There is only a limited ability to make up any time missed therefore students must be able to make Driver Ed a priority over other activities (baseball/softball/swimming, etc.) and commitments (vacations, jobs, etc.) they may have during the summer session.
There is no advantage to taking Driver Ed when you are 14 unless you are eligible and intend to apply for a Minor School License (MSL). IKM-Manning Schools will not approve an 8th grader for a MSL until after they complete their 8th grade year. Also, students who are not eligible for a MSL should keep in mind that if they complete Driver Education more than a year before they turn 16 they will be required to drive with an examiner when they apply for their Graduated Driver License at age 16.
