- All students requesting a MSL must be in good standing with the school. The board defined "good standing" as meaning the student has not had a Misconduct Report in the previous 18 weeks school was in session.
- Students living closer than one mile from the high school now could have a MSL request approved if they demonstrate a need for the license. The board has determined that a student who is involved in at least one school activity that meets before/after normal school hours at the time they request approval for the license will be eligible for the license. For example, a student who lives under the one mile distance but is currently participating in a fall activity could be approved for the license. A student under the mile distance who isn't participating in an activity until later in the school year will have to wait until that activity begins to request approval for the license. A student who lives under a mile from a school and is not involved in extracurricular activities would not be eligible for the MSL.
This is a significant change from previous practice at IKM-Manning so feel free to contact me if you have questions. Students who wish to apply for a MSL should make an appointment to meet with me to discuss the rules and regulations of the Minor School License. Letting a 14 or 15 year-old drive on their own is a significant decision that should be carefully considered by parents. Parents should feel comfortable with their student driving on their own before allowing them to apply for the MSL.
Mark your calendars: On Monday, September 10 we are pleased to host Aaron Thomas from Applington-Parkersburg High School for an assembly for students in grades 5-12.
