The IKM-Manning High School Student Council held a successful blood drive on Friday, October 6. Concentrating on student donors, the drive had 59 donors respond and collected 54 units of blood. That was just one short of their goal. With every unit able to save three lives, just think how many lives are affected when students begin donating blood as young adults and continue giving throughout their lifetime. Ms. Newman's PLTW Principles of Biomedical Science class used the blood drive as a learning opportunity as well as they saw first hand what a phlebotomist does. Student Council members work the drive; unloading the truck and setting up in the morning, escorting donors, serving in the canteen, and tearing down and loading the truck up again at the end of the day. Many student council members worked a shift and then rolled up their sleeve and donated as well. That's service learning at its finest.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 4 IKM-Manning Juniors and Seniors participated in a volunteer day helping senior citizens with house and yard chores. This is the fifth year students have stepped up and responded to a MRHC Community Health Needs Assessment committee request. The committee first approached the school four years ago to see if student volunteers could assist senior citizens around the city of Manning with various tasks. The Community Health Needs Assessment committee chose the date, lined up the jobs helping senior citizens, and provided adult volunteers to supervise the student workers. Student response to the request was good with 26 juniors and seniors giving up an early out afternoon to work with the adult volunteers raking lawns, washing windows, moving heavy objects, and a variety of other tasks. Several volunteers also worked at the Heritage Park. The afternoon of community service gave IKM-Manning juniors and seniors a chance to interact with adults in the community and earn hours toward the Silver Cord program recognizing students for their community service. With Parent/Teacher conferences just around the corner I want to remind parents/guardians about a change in grading terms for the high school that occurred last year. Previously each quarter of the school year was its own grading term. In other words students would receive a grade for the quarter and then, when the new quarter began, their grade for that quarter would start over from scratch. Then at the end of the semester the two quarter grades would be averaged together along with a semester test if applicable. Last year we eliminated the quarter grading periods and now have just one semester-long grading period. Why did we make this change?
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, October 25 and 27. Conferences will be held from 4-8 p.m. each of those evenings. At the high school, conferences are unscheduled so feel free to drop in whenever it is convenient for you each of those nights. Parents of Juniors and Seniors will also want to be aware of two meetings during the Tuesday night of conferences. At 6 p.m. there will be a Junior College Planning meeting for college-bound juniors and their parents. At 7 p.m. there will be a Senior Financial Aid meeting for parents to learn more about applying for and receiving financial aid to assist with sending a student to college. Both of these meetings will be held in the high school library. Report cards and Progress Reports were sent out by email to all parents/guardians who have an email address in our school management system. For those that do not, you may request hard copies in the HS office when you come to conferences. There will be no school on Friday, October 28. I hope to see many of you at conferences this week. Des Moines, IOWA – Today’s youth are busier and more engaged than ever. Unfortunately, this also means they have more things to distract them, especially while they are driving. Iowa’s young drivers travel many miles over local, state and interstate highways. Many of these miles are before and after school as well as late at night after work or sporting events, in all kinds of weather.
October 16-22, 2016, is dedicated to raising awareness and seeking solutions to unnecessary teen deaths on the road. National Teen Driver Safety Week was established by Congress in 2007 and is held annually on the third week of each October, its goal is to focus the country’s attention on this serious issue. In Iowa, the Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau is asking law enforcement, parents, educators and other influencers to be vigilant in helping keep our youth safe through the awareness, experience and education of teen drivers. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 14-18 year olds in the US. In fact, in 2014, there were 2,614 teen passenger vehicle drivers (15-19 years old) involved in fatal crashes and an estimated 130,000 were injured. Older teen drivers (ages 18-20) are twice as likely as young teen drivers (ages 15-17) to be involved in fatal crashes between midnight and 6:00 a.m. Yet, a recent survey shows that only 25% of parents have had a serious talk with their kids about the key components of driving. Parents need to take the time to talk with their kids about the many dangers of driving even as their teen gets older and gains more driving experience. Those dangers include alcohol, not wearing seat belts, texting, speeding, and extra passengers. Research indicates which behaviors contribute to teen-related crashes. Inexperience and immaturity combined with speed, drinking and driving, not wearing seat belts, distracted driving, drowsy driving; nighttime driving and other drug use aggravate this problem. Perhaps the most significant cause of teen crashes is multiple non-related teen passengers. This situation causes a high degree of distractions with minimal concentration on the road ahead. Often times this leads to lane departure resulting in serious or fatal crashes. Texting and driving continues to be a national epidemic, and teens are some of the worst offenders. Iowa’s electronic device law prohibits all drivers from texting while driving and also prohibits drivers under 18 from using any electronic device while driving that was not from the vehicle’s manufacturer. Parents, teachers, mentors and adult influencers are encouraged to help keep our teen drivers safe by setting a positive example while driving. Drive responsibly by buckling up, driving the speed limit, not drinking and driving and not driving distracted. Remember- you are modeling driver behavior for those around you! “It is our hope that Teen Driver Safety Week will get the word out to all parents of teens, and help them discuss these important issues,” said Mick Mulhern, Youth Coordinator for the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. “I get it,” he added. “You probably think your teens aren’t listening, but if this one conversation could save a life, isn’t it a conversation worth having?” Please contact your county sheriff’s office or local police department for local crash statistics. Congratulations to Seniors Nick Birks and Scott Halbur. They each were named Commended Students in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Although they will not continue in the 2017 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 5% of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2017 competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

All IKM-Manning community members are invited to attend with the students to see the coronation of the Homecoming King and Queen. The Homecoming parade, beginning about 2:30-2:45 or approximately 30 minutes after the pep rally ends, will organize in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church parking lot. Float entries should report to that site no later than 2:20 p.m. that day. Businesses and community organizations are encouraged to participate in the parade by entering a float butplease do not throw candy. Contact the high school office at telephone number 655-3781 or email [email protected] if you plan on entering a float. Prior notice is greatly appreciated. If your organization will have middle school or elementary students riding a float you are asked to contact Ms. Whitson no later than Tuesday, September 13. Community floats will line up in the Catholic Church parking lot and should be there by 2:20 p.m. The IKM-Manning FFA is lining up antique tractors to pull floats in the parade. Contact FFA Advisor Ben Booth if you have a tractor they can use or if you would like the FFA to find a tractor to pull your float. If weather would force us to have to cancel the parade we will still have the pep rally and coronation but move it back to 2 p.m. All normal after school bus routes, Irwin, Manilla, and Manning, would depart from in front of the school at the conclusion of the pep rally. If conditions force us to consider cancelling the parade we will try to make that decision by 10:30 a.m. on the day of the parade if possible. Parents and Students,
I've pasted an email below that came from Alan Beste at the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Each year they offer these ACT preparation materials at a very reasonable cost. If you are interested in ordering the materials just follow the instructions in the message below. Dear School Administrators and Guidance Counselors: Below you will find links to information about a special offer you and any of your students may use to receive discounted access to an online (or DVD) ACT and/or SAT study guide to help students prepare for the ACT and/or SAT test. This program is offered through the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS). Professional athletes and other organizations fund the program. The cost of a standard ACT or SAT study program is usually $250, but through this program, each is available for $20.00, which covers licensing, registration, customer support, shipping, or online access fees. As you know, the SAT/ACT is offered 6-7 times during the year. That means the information about this program needs to be consistently available so students and their families become aware of it at precisely the time during the year that they decide to begin preparing. The links below provide ordering information and additional information about the program. The online program or DVD can be ordered using a credit card or check. www.eknowledge.com/IAHSAA www.eknowledge.com/flyer.php?coupon=2761496BB3&page=2015-Back-to-School If you have any questions about the program please click on one of the links and use the contact information provided or contact Cheryl Litras, at 951-256-4076 or [email protected] We hope you are having a great school year! |
