- Increased accuracy when reporting a student's grade. There is no difference between the quarter grading system and semester grading system for the first quarter of the semester. But as we move in to second quarter of the semester, when a student or parent/guardian looks at that student's grade they will see exactly what that student is getting for the semester at that point in time. No need to try and figure out how the two quarter grades will average together.
- No false sense of security that comes from starting over the second quarter of a semester. A student who was failing at the end of the first quarter sometimes wouldn't have an appropriate level of concern about their semester grade if they were doing ok in the second quarter. They would forget about that failing quarter grade and not think about it again until the semester was nearly over. With semester grading the student always knows exactly where he/she stands.
- Colleges and community colleges typically use semester grading schemes so students are being prepared for post-high school studies.
Midterm Report cards and Progress Reports for the first semester were sent out by email on Friday, October 19 to all parents/guardians who have an email address in our school management system. If we don't have an email address those documents were sent via US mail. Parents/guardians may also request hard copies in the HS office when you come to Parent/Teacher Conferences.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, October 23 and 25. Conferences will be held from 4-8 p.m. each of those evenings. At the high school, conferences are unscheduled so feel free to drop in whenever it is convenient for you each of those nights. All parents/guardians and students are encouraged to come to conferences. If teachers have specifically requested a conference, a letter was mailed out on Tuesday, October 16 to parents/guardians letting them know that.
There will be no school on Friday, October 26.
We hope to see many of you this week at conferences.
