On Wednesday, October 17 a group of IKM-Manning high school students volunteered to help plant trees along the trail system in Manning. Geri Spies contacted the school on behalf of the Manning Trails Committee asking for assistance after the committee received a grant from the DNR to purchase 70 trees. 38 IKM-Manning high school students answered the call and spent a beautiful afternoon planting trees along with a number of adult volunteers. Evan Miller of the Iowa DNR gave all the volunteers a quick lesson on the finer points of tree-planting and then pairs of students joined an adult volunteer and worked along the trail system beginning at Trestle Park. Volunteers dug the hole, prepared the root ball of the tree for planting, planted the tree, and mulched around the tree. It was a great afternoon of community service and a chance for students and community members to work side-by-side.
