As students return from Thanksgiving Break their focus should be turning to the end of the first semester and that means semester exams are just around the corner. Please mark these dates on your calendar: Wednesday and Thursday, December 19 and 20. High school students will be taking semester exams on those two days so attendance, always important, is particularly critical on those two days. The high school will be following a block schedule for semester tests as we have done the past few years. That means class periods will be twice as long as usual. On Wednesday, December 19 periods 1, 3, 5, and 7 will meet for blocks of 85 minutes for semester exams. On Thursday, December 20 periods 2, 4, 6, and 8 will meet for exams. Semester exams represent 20% of the semester grade for a class so they are of considerable importance. Typically these exams are cumulative in nature, meaning they test students over information and skills acquired over the course of the entire first semester. They are the student's final opportunity to demonstrate to their teachers what they know and are able to do. Semester exams also give students a taste of what postsecondary education will be like. We hope that the experience of preparing for and taking semester exams in high school will prepare students for the sometimes stressful experience of final exams in college. The key, of course, is preparing for the exams. Studying and preparing for semester tests should take place over an extended period of time leading up to the exams, not in a cram session the night before. As a parent/guardian you can help your student begin preparing for these exams by asking questions about what they have learned this semester and what they think their teacher might expect them to do on a semester test. Encourage students to begin studying for these exams early, spending a little time each night reviewing their notes and materials in manageable chunks. With a little planning and preparation, semester exams don't have to be an overly stressful part of the end of the semester.
